Slough Borough Council, United Kingdom Welcomes Bigbelly

Slough Borough Council has become the latest UK authority to adopt Bigbelly’s smart waste collection technology after it agreed to roll out 18 smart stations as part of its aim to clean up the streets.

The units will allow the council’s collection teams to extend periods between each collection due to the system’s solar powered compaction technology, which increases the capacity of each unit by up to eight times when full.

Bigbelly’s ability to alert collection operatives to its fill level status means that each unit will now only be emptied when full, allowing operators to spend more time on other street cleaning operations including litter picking, sweeping and collections in hotspot areas.

The installation, which has seen the units located throughout the High Street and outside the train and bus stations, is the first step in a campaign to improve the cleanliness of the town centre and across the borough.

Councillor Rob Anderson, cabinet member for environment and leisure, said: “This is the first move in our campaign to make the town centre cleaner, safer and more vibrant for residents. We all know there are big plans for the shopping area, but while these are coming forward, we want to do all we can to ensure the centre of Slough is a pleasant and clean environment for people.”

The campaign will also see community clean ups, increased litter collection, enforcement and public awareness initiatives.

Egbert Taylor’s Sales Director, Mark Jenkins, who is overseeing Bigbelly’s UK expansion, adds: “More and more local authorities are turning to Bigbelly as the long term cost savings it delivers, in addition to its ability to free up collection operatives’ time for other frontline services, becomes clear. In a world driven by the need to be smarter Bigbelly is innovating the waste industry and helping councils to make make considerable efficiency gains.”
